What is MACD Indicator, How to Use It?
MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is a powerful technical indicator used for trend following and momentum measurement. Developed by Gerald Appel in the 1970s, MACD is still among the most widely used indicators today.
The 3 Components of MACD
- MACD Line: The difference between a short-period EMA (default: 12) and a long-period EMA (26). MACD = EMA(12) - EMA(26)
- Signal Line: A 9-period EMA of the MACD line. Think of it as a smoothed MACD line.
- Histogram: The difference between the MACD line and the signal line. Positive histogram = bullish momentum, negative = bearish momentum.
How are MACD Signals Generated?
1. Line Crossover
When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, a BUY signal is generated. When it crosses below, a SELL signal is generated. This is the most basic and common MACD signal.
2. Zero Line Crossover
When the MACD line crosses above zero (the short EMA crossed the long EMA), the trend has turned bullish. When it crosses below, a reverse trend has started. This signal is stronger but occurs less frequently.
3. Divergence
If price makes a new high while MACD does not (negative divergence), it means the trend is weakening and a reversal may be approaching. This signal is an indicator that experienced analysts pay close attention to.
While MACD divergence is a strong signal, it is not definitive. It is always recommended to confirm with other indicators.
MACD Parameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Period | 12 | Fast EMA period |
| Slow Period | 26 | Slow EMA period |
| Signal Period | 9 | Signal line EMA period |
The 12/26/9 parameters are optimized for daily charts. In shorter timeframes (such as 1h, 4h), different parameters may give better results. Optimo finds this automatically.
Advantages and Disadvantages of MACD
- ✅ Combines trend and momentum information
- ✅ Visually easy to interpret
- ✅ Can be used in both short and long term
- ❌ It is a lagging indicator
- ❌ Produces too many false signals in sideways markets
Using MACD in Optimo
When you select MACD in Optimo, all logical combinations of Fast/Slow/Signal periods are tested. For example, for BTCUSDT 4h, the 8/21/5 combination may perform better than the standard 12/26/9. While finding this manually takes hours, Optimo does it in a few minutes.
